The Department of Conservation (DOC) emphasizes science-based decision-making in the interest of all Californians. Our services affect people and the habitats of wildlife and aquatic species living in and around California. We strive to balance today’s needs with tomorrow’s obligations by enabling the intelligent and safe use and conservation of resources every day. Our services rely upon science-based decisions which affect the people, habitats and wildlife in and around our state.

For example, DOC:

  • Regulates exploration and production of oil, natural gas, geothermal, and mineral resources
  • Administers the Williamson Act  to preserve agricultural resources, including farmland
  • Protects public safety by identifying potential geological hazards such as earthquake faults and areas vulnerable to landslides
