Landslide Maps Available from the
California Geological Survey

IntroductionMap showing counties where CGS has Landslide Maps available

Since 1969, the California Geological Survey has produced numerous maps showing landslide features and delineating potential slope-stability problem areas. There are six principal types of landslide-related maps and reports. Four of these types are advisory in nature:

  • Landslide Hazard Identification Maps–Typically 1:24,000 in scale, comprised of three types of maps (landslide features, landslide susceptibility and debris-flow susceptibility). Produced from 1986 through 1995, as directed by the now-repealed Landslide Hazard Mapping Act.

  • Watershed Maps–Typically 1:24,000 in scale, landslide features maps developed to assist in timber harvest planning and water quality protection. Some maps have overprints indicating steepness of slopes. All are indexed in CGS Note 40 and Special Publication 120. Most are available for downloading in PDF format or on CD-ROM with GIS data. Click here to learn more..

  • "Geology for Planning" Products–Maps and accompanying reports that detail landslide features. Most of these products were produced at the request of city, county, or state agencies on a cost-sharing basis. Each product is uniquely designed to meet the needs of the contracting agency. Scale and map content vary. Most show landslide features and geology; some show landslide susceptibility.

  • Regional Geologic Maps–Scales vary. These principally are geologic maps; some show selected landslide features.

  • Seismic Hazard Zone Maps–These are 1:24,000-scale regulatory maps issued under the Seismic Hazard Mapping Act. Unlike the other maps listed herein, where potential earthquake-induced landslide hazards have been zoned, site-specific assessments of landslide hazards are required by law prior to development. Technical reports detailing location of landslide deposits, slope, rock strength, and other factors on which the regulatory maps are based will be available in the near future.
Note: For Landslide Maps and Reports produced by or related to the Seismic Hazard Mapping Program (SHMP) please click here.

A sixth landslide-related product consists of reports and maps that document landslide occurrences following major disasters or significant events. Summaries published as articles in CALIFORNIA GEOLOGY magazine are not included in the list below. Summaries published as monographs are included in the list that follows.

How to Order These Maps and Reports

Seismic Hazard Zone Maps are available in several formats. GIS data may be downloaded from the Seismic Hazards Zonation Program. Paper copies are available from BPS Reprographic Services, 945 Bryant Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, telephone (415) 495-8700. Maps must be ordered by quadrangle name.

All other CGS landslide products may be ordered pre-paid directly from the California Geological Survey Publications Office, 801 K Street, MS 14-34, Sacramento, CA 95814. CGS accepts MasterCard or VISA.  Please use product number when ordering. For information on ordering, click here. For current prices, see the CGS Publications database
