State Laws Regarding the

Department of Conservation's

Division of Mines and Geology

The California Geological Survey and the California Division of Mines and Geology (as cited in various codes) are one in the same. It's not uncommon for agencies to adopt shorter, more descriptive trade names. For example, the California Department of Transportation is more commonly known as "Caltrans." In January 2002, CGS first began using its current moniker.
