The Department of Conservation's Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM, formerly DOGGR) has scanned the well records for California's geothermal resources. The
GeoSteam web application allows the viewing of the well records. The records include the history and logs that compose the hard-copy well files. There are nearly 4,000 well records and all of them have been scanned to date.
No information on confidential wells is available through this website.
The screen shown below is the selection criteria that are used to find wells. Wells can be found based on the County, Field, Operator names, the API number, or the Section, Township, and Range location. Selecting one of these criteria will bring up additional selection screens where you can scroll down to make additional selections, and use the buttons that appear to the left to make further selections, as needed. The Get Wells button brings up a list of wells that meet the selection criteria. Clicking on the API number brings up the well information screen.
GeoSteam also allows the viewing of monthly production and injection. The information is viewed by individual well. The information can be printed or exported into an Excel spreadsheet. It may also be copied and pasted to a program of your choice.
Note: Unless drilled with public funds, wells on active federal leases are confidential and remain confidential until the lease is no longer active, or the operator voluntarily releases these records. Some low-temperature wells are exempt from submitting production and injection data.
The well type codes are as follows:
CLT = Commercial low-temperature well
DST = Developmental Steam well
DWT= Developmental high-temperature water well
ELT = Exploratory low-temperature well
EST = Exploratory Steam well
EWT = Exploratory high-temperature water well
INJ = Injection well
NLT= Non-commercial low-temperature well
OBS = Observation well
TG = Temperature Gradient well
WW = Water Well
The well status codes are as follows:
ABDN = plugged and abandoned
ACTV = active
CANC = cancelled
DEST = deserted
IDLE = idle
LOST = lost
PROP = proposed
SUSP = suspended
UNKN = unknown
The mineral rights codes are as follows:
F = federal
P = private
S = state
Once you’ve located the well of interest via the selection criteria, a window will display well information at the top, and the various scanned well record files underneath the well information header. To open and view a file, click on the API number highlighted in blue. The naming convention for the scanned well files is: API number, type of file, and the scanned on date. The type of file names used includes:
Data = Continuous Logs, Forms, History, Index, Location, Summary, Survey (Note: a separate folder labeled TIFS contains tiff versions of continuous well logs only)
Continuous Log names include:
1. The API number
2. The scale (2 or 5-inch)
3. The type (Dual Induction, Mud, Sonic, Neutron Density Gamma ray, Cement Bond Log, Other)
4. The run number
5. Date the log was scanned
EXAMPLES:
05190135 2MUD1 08-12-2006.pdf = 2” Mud Log, run 1
05190135 5DIL2 08-12-2006.pdf = 5” Dual Induction Log, run 2
05190135 5NDG1 08-12-2006.pdf = 5” Neutron Density Gamma Log, run 1
